The Floor As Your Canvas – Sambil Santo Domingo

Design Notes: The first Sambil Mall was built in 1998 in Caracas, Venezuela using cement terrazzo for its decorative floors in the corridors and walking areas. The Sambil group continued to use that flooring system in seven additional malls they constructed leading up to the construction of the Santo Domingo Mall. In 2010 they began construction on the Sambil Mall Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, the biggest Mall of the Caribbean.  With this new project they wanted higher design with brighter colors. Unfortunately with the limitations of cement terrazzo they were not able to achieve some of the bright colors the architect wanted to include. So they made the decision to switch to epoxy terrazzo for the common areas and aisles.

While researching for an experienced epoxy terrazzo contractor they located Garcia Smester, who had previously been successful on two large epoxy terrazzo projects for commercial centers in the Dominican Republic. The architect was very comfortable with Garcia Smester’s installation history and assigned this Sambil Mall project to them. Upon completion the owners & architects were extremely satisfied with the transition to epoxy terrazzo and their new mall which continues to be the center piece of the Caribbean.

Design Notes: Talk about a grand entrance! The stunning geometric design was the perfect choice for both the space and the architecture of the building.  Over 100 hulien green marble tiles are embedded in the floor and surrounded by four subtle neutral terrazzo colors.  The combination of marble, mother-of-pearl and mirror chips accent this intricate yet timeless pattern.  Terrazzo offers an environmentally friendly and extremely durable choice for academic settings.

All About Sealers!

How often should you seal your countertops? mSGspGVHrVN46CTxXcEHrTA

Generally, we recommend resealing your countertops approximately once per year. With the amount of money one spends on material and fabrication the minimal dollar amount it costs to reseal is a very wise investment. If you maintain/clean your countertops regularly with natural stone cleaners (our or T&M Neutral Cleaner) your sealer should be effective for 3-5 years.

How do you know when to reseal?

The best/easiest way to determine if your sealer is performing would be to apply a drop of water at least ½ inch in diameter to the top of the stone and let it sit on the stone for at least 15 minutes. Cover the area with a glass to inhibit evaporation. Wipe off the water drop, if the stone did not darken then your stone is sealed against water-based stains. Testing for oil repellency is not as simple because if your stone is not sealed, you will have an oil stain.

What should I use to remove a stain on my stone countertop?

First, you wou774581713ld need to identify what type of stain you are dealing with. If it is an oil base stain, Oil + Stain Remover by Stonetech would be your best option. If it is an organic stain, a dry poultice mixed with water should do the trick. After stain removal, reseal your countertop with your preferred sealer. We would recommend Bulletproof by Stonetech as it is a water based sealer, and perfoms better than any other water based sealer on the market.

We recognized that it was time for a change with our stone location off of Lake Street in Chicago. We went to work and completely remodeled the showroom and cleaned up the warehouse.
