LAX Bradley West Concourse & Core

Architect: Fentress Architects – Denver, CO
Terrazzo Contractor: CORRADINI Corp. – Fountain Valley, CA
Terrazzo Resin Supplier: Terrazzo & Marble Supply Companies
(Terroxy® Resin Systems)

Design Notes: It’s clear why LAX Bradley won this year’s NTMA Job of the Year.  This enormous airport terminal expansion includes over 555,000 square feet of 3/8” Epoxy Terrazzo in eleven different colors across 6 different levels. The architect chose a whimsical color pattern in hopes of directing traffic flow while tying each of the design elements together.   A striking, yet challenging feature are the Cast-in-Place Terrazzo portals that wrap up along the walls continuing onto the ceiling.  Precast terrazzo stair cases and landings were used to join each of the levels together.  This airport terminal illustrates the perfect balance of an artistic design flow while maintaining a functional low maintenance traffic area for the city’s expanding needs.

Floor As Your Canvas – San Diego Int. Airport

Architect: HNTB – San Diego, CA
Terrazzo Contractor: T.B. Penick & Sons –  San Diego, CA
Terrazzo Resin Supplier: Terrazzo & Marble Supply Companies
(Terroxy® Resin Systems)

Design Notes: The improved San Diego International Airport features 215,000 square feet of terrazzo.  Architect, Gordon Phillips chose terrazzo not only because of its durability but the ability to produce a  multitude of design ideas while keeping a seamless and clean finish. The idea behind the design was to reflect the movement of the surf on black sand showing in order across the width of the concourses – black sand, wet sand, foam, foam on water and water in sequence.  The terrazzo pattern in the areas of the terminals known as Sunset Cove and the Rotundas, was inspired by the tide pools and boardwalks at Point Loma, a local beach in San Diego.  The results were not only beautiful but conveyed San Diego’s unique sense of home.

Design Notes: This Uptown Train Station and City Hall located in Normal, IL is anything but Normal.  Being known as the second busiest Amtrak station in Illinois, and the City Hall of Normal, terrazzo was the first choice for flooring.  A clean and simple color scheme was chosen on the ground floor in order to complement the focal point, an intricate terrazzo graphic of a compass with retro depictions of trains, buses, cars and pedestrians.  The floor layout follows a radius design throughout, tying together both ramped floors and precast treads and risers.  This 12,000 square-foot of 3/8” epoxy terrazzo in nine colors is built to last 100 years.

Design Notes: Resembling the beaches of Florida, Jacksonville International Airport Terminal Expansion has over 100 sea fossil themed glass mosaics embedded in the floor throughout the terminal.  These mosaics were hand placed with clear epoxy, then pigmented resin was poured through each of the designs.  For high traffic areas, a grand stylized wave flow design was used along with a hand broadcast blend of recycled glass and mother-of-pearl chips to represent the sun on white caps at the beach.  This 225,000 square foot terrazzo installation was polished to a 3,000 grit finish to achieve its finishing touches giving the saying ‘Welcome to Sunny Florida’ a whole new meaning.

Terrazzo Contractor: Alpine Terrazzo, Inc. – Maitland, FL
Terrazzo Resin Supplier: Terrazzo & Marble Supply Companies

Design Notes:  Nu Vista Living’s facility welcomes guests and visitors with its bright and inviting newly remodeled terrazzo flooring.  The focal point of this project is a fiery medallion at the center of the terrazzo floor which radiates outwards into a geometrical pattern.  Inspired by the Fibonacci sequence, the tone-on-tone colors were achieved by changing the resin color while keeping the aggregate mix the same.  In addition to marble aggregates, Mother-of-Pearl was used adding a glimmer of iridescence. The seamless floor is easily maintained and great for high traffic.
